    Telkom & Openserve

    Same fibre, different ISP

Telkom-the-ISP and Openserve-the-network are sister companies. The cable in the ground is identical regardless of which ISP you buy from - the differences are price, peering and support.

Openserve is South Africa's largest fibre network operator with the widest geographic footprint - they're in metros, secondary cities and an increasing number of small towns. The trade-off is that their consumer speeds are mostly asymmetrical (more download than upload).

Buying Telkom fibre direct works, but you typically pay more than equivalent ISPs on the same Openserve line. Webafrica, Afrihost and MWEB all sell Openserve fibre at lower price points with comparable or better support.

    Telkom connectivity range

Openserve FTTH (Fibre to the Home)

Telkom's residential fibre runs over Openserve infrastructure. Asymmetrical speeds from 20/10 Mbps up to 1 Gbps depending on lit-up status.

    Telkom LTE & 5G

Where Openserve fibre isn't yet lit, Telkom offers fixed LTE and 5G as a transitional option. Fibre wins on latency and reliability when available.

    Business Fibre & Voice

Telkom Business pairs Openserve fibre with hosted PBX, SD-WAN and SLA-backed support - a different tier to residential.

    Coverage

    Where Openserve reaches

Openserve has the broadest geographic coverage of any SA FNO - but lit-up status varies street by street within covered areas.

Map of Openserve fibre coverage across South Africa

Openserve covers most of South Africa's metros and a fast-growing list of secondary towns including Polokwane, Mbombela, George, Knysna, Stellenbosch and East London.

    FAQ

    Telkom Fibre questions

Openserve is the FNO - the Telkom-owned subsidiary that builds and maintains the physical fibre cables. 'Telkom fibre' is the consumer ISP product that runs over Openserve. You can also buy Openserve from other ISPs like Webafrica, Afrihost, MWEB and Cool Ideas, often cheaper.

Generally no. Webafrica is consistently the cheapest mainstream ISP on Openserve, with free install and free router included on every plan. Telkom's pricing is usually 10–25% higher on equivalent speed tiers.

If your area is lit-up, the standard install is 7–14 working days from order. New cable runs in greenfield sites can take longer - sometimes up to 30 days for civil works.

Telkom is gradually retiring the legacy copper voice service. On fibre, you'd port your number to a VoIP service. Most ISPs offer this as an optional add-on.

Openserve currently sells 20/10, 30/10, 50/25, 100/50, 200/100, 500/200 and 1000/200 Mbps speed tiers in lit-up areas. Symmetrical speeds are limited - Openserve is mostly asymmetrical.
