Telkom-the-ISP and Openserve-the-network are sister companies. The cable in the ground is identical regardless of which ISP you buy from - the differences are price, peering and support.
Openserve is South Africa's largest fibre network operator with the widest geographic footprint - they're in metros, secondary cities and an increasing number of small towns. The trade-off is that their consumer speeds are mostly asymmetrical (more download than upload).
Buying Telkom fibre direct works. We do not track Telkom's own retail prices, so this page makes no claim about how they compare - what it can show you is what the five ISPs we do track charge for the identical line. Webafrica, MWeb, Afrihost, RSAweb and Vox all sell Openserve fibre, and they do not agree on price: the spread between the cheapest and the dearest seller of one speed tier reaches R1 502 a month. ISPs reselling Openserve fibre
Because the line is identical, the switch is unusually low-risk: no new install, no new ONT, and the Openserve port stays exactly where it is. That makes Telkom one of the few products where a straight price comparison is the whole decision, so it is worth reading the Openserve rows above against the rest of the market on our full fibre comparison table before you renew with Telkom for another year.
Who is actually cheapest on Openserve
Openserve is open-access, so the fibre in the ground is identical whichever ISP bills you. That makes this the whole decision. Across the 13 speed tiers where more than one ISP sells the same line, RSAweb is cheapest on 11 of them.

Telkom's residential fibre runs over Openserve infrastructure. We track 58 monthly Openserve lines, from 10/5 Mbps at R307 up to 1 Gbps, depending on lit-up status.
Telkom LTE & 5G
Where Openserve fibre isn't yet lit, Telkom offers fixed LTE and 5G as a transitional option. Fibre wins on latency and reliability when available.

Telkom Business pairs Openserve fibre with hosted PBX, SD-WAN and SLA-backed support - a different tier to residential.

Openserve has the broadest geographic coverage of any SA FNO - but lit-up status varies street by street within covered areas.

Openserve, bought from an ISP rather than from Telkom is the right buy if…
- You have decided on Openserve and only need a sellerWe hold verified prices for 58 monthly Openserve lines from 5 ISPs. The fibre is the same on all of them, so nothing about the connection changes with the name on the invoice - which makes this a price comparison and very little else.
- You are willing to switch ISP without switching networkOn the 1000/500 Mbps tier the cheapest and the dearest seller of the identical line are R1 502 a month apart. No install, no new fibre box and no change to the line itself sits between those two numbers.
- You will read the two-year number rather than the monthly oneOn 3 of the 13 tiers we can total, the cheaper monthly rate is the DEARER line over 24 months once its promotional rate reverts and its once-off is counted. The deal table above is sorted on monthly price, so on those rows it is ordered the wrong way round, and the cost table says which.
Who should look elsewhere
- Your address does not show OpenserveEvery price here is conditional on Openserve having reached your street, and that is decided by the trench outside rather than by which ISP you prefer. Check coverage at the address first - if nothing shows, no amount of comparing sellers on this page helps you.
- You want the cheapest line in South Africa, not on this networkThis page compares 5 sellers of one network, and its floor is R307 from Afrihost. Another network may be cheaper at your address, and a page scoped to one network cannot tell you that - compare across networks before you commit.
- You have not checked what each seller charges up frontOnce-off charges differ by seller on the same line and are not in the monthly figure: RSAweb R250, Afrihost varies by line, Mweb varies by line, Webafrica R249, Vox varies by line. A seller publishing no figure is not the same as a seller charging nothing, and both land on the first invoice rather than the monthly one.
