About Octotel Fibre

Octotel is a leading provider of Fibre To The Home (FTTH) and Business (FTTB) internet services in Cape Town, South Africa. As an independent fibre provider, Octotel offers an alternative to the ageing and congested ADSL network. Their Open Access business model, in partnership with the community and local ISPs, allows them to provide line rental services to ISPs on a fully vendor-neutral basis. Octotel is committed to Preferential Procurement and supporting empowered businesses in our supply chain. Their proactive procurement approach and internal policies ensure that they meet the objectives of Preferential Procurement.

Established in 2016, and under Actis’ ownership, the company offers seamless fibre-optic broadband to over 80,000 customers, passing more than 257,000 homes and businesses through its open-access fibre network. Octotel offers affordable and reliable services from a choice of over 50 of the country’s top Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Octotel provides line rental services to Internet Service Providers on a vendor-neutral basis, enabling high-speed data connectivity for homes and businesses across the region.

One of the major advantages of Octotel’s services is its use of fibre technology. Fibre is considered the fastest and most stable technology for internet access, as opposed to the older copper-based infrastructure of ADSL. Fibre has a 20+ year lifespan and can provide speeds that are orders of magnitude faster than copper networks. Octotel is dedicated to bringing fibre connectivity directly into every home, using the same technology as in leading international fibre internet markets.

In addition to their use of fibre technology, Octotel offers an alternative to the outdated and congested ADSL network. The company rolls out its fibre network in partnership with the community and local ISPs, using an Open Access business model (see FAQs below). Octotel is an independent fibre provider that offers line rental services to ISPs on a fully vendor-neutral basis.

Octotel also has a proactive approach to procurement, with internal policies that support the objectives of Preferential Procurement and ensures that the company’s supply chain includes as many empowered businesses as possible. Overall, Octotel is a reliable and forward-thinking provider of internet services in Cape Town.

Octotel installed a free 1000mbps fibre connection to over 110 schools, providing internet access for over 50,000 students.

How Does Octotel Roll Out its Fibre Networks?

Octotel is committed to providing its customers with fast and reliable fibre internet. In order to do this, the company engages in a thorough planning process before beginning any physical trenching work. This includes determining the route for the core cable, the location of cables that will connect each home, and the placement of manholes. Once the plan is in place, it is submitted to the relevant government institutions for approval.

Once the plan is approved, Octotel begins the trenching process. This includes digging up sidewalks and laying empty ducts for the core route cables and cables that will connect each home. Manholes are also installed during this process to allow for easy connection to the network.

Once the ducts have been laid, Octotel ensures that the integrity of the ducts has been maintained before reinstating the road. This means that the tar, paving or unpaved ground is returned to its original state or an improved state.

Finally, Octotel uses high-pressure air to blow the fibre through the empty ducts between manholes. The fibre is then connected to other manholes by fusing the fibre strands together. This ensures that the fibre internet reaches each home efficiently and effectively.

Octotel Fibre to the Home (FTTH)

Grey Wall Box Placement

In order to provide efficient fibre installation for single-dwelling homes, Octotel installs a wall box on each home that they pass. Before installation, a sticker is placed to indicate where the wall box will be mounted, allowing customers to adjust the placement for optimal fit. If the sticker is not moved during this time, customers can still request to move the wall box by contacting Octotel.

Internal Cabling

In some cases, internal cabling may be required to connect your fibre line to your router. This is typically the case when the wall box is located in a location that is not convenient for your router. Your service provider will be able to advise on whether internal cabling is required and arrange for it to be installed.

Getting Connected with Octotel Fibre

Octotel encourages customers to consider ordering a service through one of their service providers. A dedicated page is available on their website, to help customers find the best package for their needs. By choosing Octotel for fibre installation, customers can be sure they are receiving the most reliable and efficient service for their single-dwelling home.

Once you have decided on a service provider, Octotel will then handle the process of connecting you to the fibre network. This typically involves a technician visiting your home to install the necessary equipment and activate your service.

Activation

Once the installation is complete, your service provider will activate your fibre line and you will be able to start enjoying the high-speed connectivity that fibre offers. It’s important to note that you will need to have an active account with an internet service provider to use the fibre line.
