Vumatel 200/200 Mbps - the same physical line, resold by the 5 ISPs we publish verified prices for. Below is the real R/Mbps spread you'll see at most addresses, straight from our live deal data.

Read the chart with the promo caveat. 4 of these 5 packages are on an introductory rate, so the bars above rank on a price that expires. Once every promo has run out, the cheapest line on this tier is RSAweb at R1 095/mo (R5.47/Mbps). The "Reverts to" column below is what you actually pay from the month the discount ends.

Only ISPs we hold a verified price for appear here - Cool Ideas and Vodacom are absent because we publish no verified price for either, and an estimate would be worse than the gap.

One network at one speed is deliberate - it is the only way to hold the product constant and show that the spread above is pure ISP margin rather than a difference in the line. It is also the limit of what this table proves. RSAweb's lead here does not transfer to Vumatel's other tiers, let alone to a different network, because each ISP prices each rung of the ladder on its own. The 200 Mbps fibre deals page runs the same ranking across every network at this speed rather than Vumatel alone, so it is the better starting point if you already know which tier you want and have not settled on a network.

    Factors

What to compare when buying fibre

Don't compare on price alone. The four factors below decide whether you'll be happy with your line at month six.

    Speed & data

The residential catalogue runs from 10 Mbps to multi-gig, but the volume sits in the 100-500 Mbps band. Pick the speed that matches your household - not the marketing. A 1 Gbps line saturates a single laptop's Wi-Fi card before it ever helps.

    Price & contract length

Compare total cost over 12 months including activation, router fees and clawbacks. Month-to-month vs 24-month contracts often have very different effective prices once promo periods end.

    Customer service & reliability

Read TrustPilot, MyBroadband forums and Hello Peter. A cheap ISP with broken support costs more in the long run. The MyBroadband ISP-of-the-year list is the most credible single signal.

    Free extras

Free installation, free-to-use router, free voice minutes and a free first month all carry real value, but each ISP quotes its own figure and attaches its own conditions - routers are usually loaned, not given. The freebies column in the table above shows what each package actually includes; read the tooltip before you price it in.

    Save money

    How to save on fibre

    Use comparison tools

Side-by-side tables (like the one above) reveal which ISP is cheapest at your speed tier - and surface the freebies the marketing pages bury below the fold.

    Negotiate retention

Existing customer? Call retention before cancelling. An ISP would rather discount than lose you to a competitor. Retention offers are negotiated case by case and are never published, so we can't quote a figure - but they are worth the phone call.

    Bundle services

VoIP, IPTV and mobile data bundles can pull the effective monthly price down. Vodacom, Telkom and MTN all market fibre + mobile combos; none of them publish the bundled price in a form we can verify, so price the bundle yourself against the standalone line before switching.

    Hunt promotions

Black Friday (late November), financial year-end (March) and back-to-school (January) all trigger ISP discounting, usually as an introductory rate for the first few months plus waived activation. Check the revert price, not the promo price - the promos live in our tables show what each one actually costs from the month the discount ends.

The one saving that beats all four of those is buying at the right tier in the first place. The spread between the cheapest and dearest ISP on a single line is real money, but the spread between speed tiers is larger still, and most households are paying for a tier above the one they actually use. If price is the binding constraint, start from the cheapest fibre deals we track and work upwards until the speed is sufficient, rather than picking a speed first and hunting a discount on it afterwards.

    Decision Tree

    Which ISP should you pick

A quick three-question filter to narrow 16+ SA fibre ISPs down to the right shortlist.

Pick the right SA fibre ISP in 3 questions

    1. Q1

      What matters most to you?

    2. Q2

      What's your contract preference?

      • Month-to-month → Webafrica, Afrihost, MWeb, RSAweb and Vox all sell this line month-to-month by default
      • Fixed 12-24 month term → Mostly the mobile operators. We don't publish their fibre pricing, so compare their quote against the month-to-month prices above yourself.
    3. Q3

      Do you want bundled extras?

      • Yes - voice/streaming/mobile → Vodacom, Telkom and MTN all bundle fibre with their other products - price the bundle, not the headline
      • No - just fibre → Webafrica, Afrihost, MWeb, RSAweb or Vox - cleaner pricing without forced bundles
    Fine print

    Read the fine print

Headline prices hide the real cost. Watch for: a once-off processing or setup fee (Webafrica’s stated once-off is R249 on 53 of its lines and rises to R1 248 on others — R249 on 53, R748 on 13, R1 248 on 24 lines respectively; RSAweb charges R999 or the network's actual install cost, whichever is greater), free installation that is free only on selected packages, routers that are loaned rather than given and must be returned in original condition, early-termination fees (Webafrica, Afrihost and RSAweb all publish R999, though Afrihost's applies only within the first six months), and promo-rate revert dates. That last one is the expensive one: on the Vumatel 200/200 line above, RSAweb goes R539 → R1 095, Webafrica goes R1 009 → R1 109, Vox goes R1 015 → R1 215, Mweb goes R1 059 → R1 209 once the intro period ends. Read the SLA - does the ISP commit to uptime targets, response times and credits if they miss? Webafrica advertises an activation guarantee with R999 account credit if the line isn't live in time, though the window varies by network (14, 21 and 30-day variants all appear across its range), which is one of the few publicly-committed SLAs in the SA market.

    The verdict

Where this comparison helps, and where it does not

Both sides are computed from the 685 monthly packages compared above, so they move when the prices do.

A deal from this comparison is the right buy if…

    • You want to compare across ISPs, not inside oneWe hold verified prices for 685 monthly packages from 7 ISPs across 45 networks, from R99/mo for 100/100 Mbps Uncapped up to 2 500 Mbps. Comparing one ISP's own range cannot tell you whether that range is competitive.
    • You are buying on monthly priceThe cheapest genuinely-monthly line we track is 100/100 Mbps Uncapped on Octotel from RSAweb at R99/mo. That is the floor of this pool, not a mid-table price.
    • You are buying on value per megabit2500/2500 Mbps Uncapped on Octotel from RSAweb works out at R0.40/Mbps against R0.99/Mbps for the cheapest line - the best rand-per-megabit in this pool at R995/mo.
    • You upload as much as you download464 of the 685 monthly lines here are symmetrical, from R99/mo for 100/100 Mbps Uncapped on Octotel. Matched upload is what video calls, cloud backups and streaming out depend on.

    Who should look elsewhere

    • Your address has no fibre yetEvery price on this page is conditional on one of these 45 networks having reached your street, and that is decided by the trench outside, not by which ISP you prefer. Check coverage at the address first - if nothing shows, this page cannot help you and a fixed-wireless or LTE line is the comparison to run instead.
    • You are judging on the headline price alone2500/2500 Mbps Uncapped on Octotel from RSAweb advertises R995/mo, but that rate runs for 2 months and then bills R1 995 - a jump of R1 000/mo, the steepest in this pool. 226 of the 685 lines here step up the same way. Compare what a line costs over two years, not what it costs in month one.
    • You have budgeted the monthly but not the once-off552 of the 685 monthly lines here carry a stated once-off charge - typically R250, and as much as R4 600 on 20/20 Mbps Uncapped on Purple Forest Waterfall View. It lands on the first invoice, so a line that is a few rand cheaper every month can still cost more over the first year. The rest publish no figure at all, which is not the same as free.
    • You want a gigabit on an entry-line budgetThe cheapest gigabit we hold a verified price for is 1000/250 Mbps Uncapped on Vumatel from RSAweb at R699/mo - 7.1x the cheapest line on this page. No amount of comparing closes that gap; it is a different product, not a better deal.
    • You assume the cheapest line is the best valueIt is not. 5/5 Mbps Uncapped on Comtel Fibre works out at R75.80/Mbps against R0.40/Mbps for 2500/2500 Mbps Uncapped on Octotel - 190.5x the price per megabit. If a bigger line fits the budget at all, it buys far more per rand.

    FAQ

    Comparison questions

Ookla-powered tests are the gold standard - including the FastestFibre speed-test page and MyBroadband's tool. Always test from a wired device close to the router for accurate numbers - Wi-Fi will under-report your line speed by 30-60%.

The FNO (Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot, Octotel etc.) owns the cables in the ground. The ISP (Webafrica, Afrihost, MWeb, RSAweb, Vox etc.) rents bandwidth from the FNO and sells it to you with their own pricing, support and contract. The same physical line can be sold by 10+ different ISPs - we currently publish verified prices for 5 of them on the Vumatel 200/200 line.

Telkom is the retail brand; Openserve is the wholesale FNO Telkom owns. Other ISPs (Webafrica, Afrihost, Vox) also resell Openserve - often at sharper pricing than Telkom's own retail price. There is no quality difference between Telkom Fibre and any other ISP on Openserve.

No - it's the other way round. On Ookla's Speedtest Global Index city table, Cape Town's median fixed download is 90.20 Mbps (global rank 93) against Johannesburg's 72.67 Mbps (rank 107). That is a city-wide median across every fixed connection, not a fibre-only figure, so your own line matters far more than your city. Vumatel and Octotel dominate Cape Town; Openserve and Vumatel lead Johannesburg.

Yes. The FNO line stays - you just transfer the active service from one ISP to another. The new ISP picks up the existing line within 24-72 hours, no technician visit needed. There may be a small porting fee depending on the FNO.

Most ISPs charge an early-termination fee (often R999 or pro-rata of remaining months). Calculate whether the saving from switching beats the penalty before you commit. With 6+ months left on a 24-month contract, switching rarely pays - wait for renewal.

Trust independent benchmarks like Ookla Speedtest scores, MyBroadband's annual ISP survey and verified TrustPilot reviews. Be sceptical of ranking blogs that don't disclose methodology - many are pure affiliate content with no real testing.
