42% of the 406 000 homes Frogfoot has passed are actually connected - within a couple of points of Vumatel's own 42% uptake rate despite Frogfoot's footprint being a fraction of the size. A comparable take-up rate on a smaller footprint suggests Frogfoot isn't struggling to convert homes it has already passed - it simply hasn't built as far yet.

Frogfoot is open-access, so the network itself never changes - what changes is who bills you, what freebies come with the line, and whether the price is promotional or standard. Three ISPs currently resell Frogfoot through FastestFibre's tracked catalogue: Webafrica, Mweb and Afrihost. Every price below is the live, current-month rate for each ISP's own Frogfoot listing.

Run the numbers per Mbps rather than by sticker price and the ranking shifts at the top end: Webafrica's 1000/500 Mbps Uncapped tier works out cheapest per Mbps overall at R1.38, even though it isn't the cheapest tier in absolute monthly terms. For a household that can commit to R1 379 a month, that's the better value buy; for anyone trying to keep the bill as low as possible in rand terms, Mweb's 60/30 Mbps Uncapped line at R599 is the actual cheapest entry point onto the network today.

Worked example: two neighbours on the same Frogfoot street both order the 400/400 Mbps symmetrical tier - one through Webafrica at R1 239/month, the other through Afrihost at R1 317/month. Over 24 months that's R29 736 versus R31 608 - a R1 872 difference for an identical speed on the identical physical line, before factoring in either ISP's own router and setup freebies. On Frogfoot, the network never explains that gap - the ISP you pick does.

Frogfoot prices a symmetrical (matched upload) option at every download speed we track, alongside a cheaper asymmetrical version of the same download tier. Pairing every asymmetric/symmetric tier at the same download speed, per ISP, shows what the upload upgrade actually costs rather than treating it as a rule of thumb.

Across all 20 pairs, matched upload costs an average of R107/month more than the equivalent asymmetric tier at the same download speed - worth paying for households doing video calls, cloud backups or uploading large files, and worth skipping for anyone who mostly streams and browses.

Frogfoot's pitch is aggressive entry-level pricing on a smaller, denser footprint. Vumatel's pitch is scale - the country's largest fibre footprint, with pricing that starts higher but a symmetrical option available from its lowest tier up.

Read the footprint numbers carefully: Vumatel's 2 040 231 homes passed is roughly five times Frogfoot's reach, but that's a national figure against a network that has deliberately concentrated on denser pockets of four metros rather than building broadly. The fairer comparison isn't "which network is bigger" - it's "which network is actually lit at this specific address, and at what price."

Who should look elsewhere: if Frogfoot doesn't reach your address, no amount of price comparison here helps - check the coverage map first. If your household needs a nationally recognised network with the broadest possible footprint for peace of mind (a landlord requirement, a work-from-home policy, a planned move), Vumatel or Openserve's much larger footprints are the safer starting point even at a higher entry price. Everyone else chasing the cheapest verified uncapped line in SA, with or without matched upload, is Frogfoot's actual target customer.
