What is RSAweb Openserve on Prepaid?

RSAweb's Openserve prepaid fibre works much like airtime: you buy a pass up front, your line runs for that period, and you top up again when it expires. There is no monthly debit order, no fixed contract and no minimum commitment, which makes it a genuinely flexible option for renters, students, holiday-home owners and anyone who would rather not be billed in months they are away.

The important detail when you are price-comparing is the pass length. The R205 entry pass covers 20/10 Mbps for 14 days, not 30 - so on a per-month basis it works out closer to R410 than R205. That is still competitive for a no-commitment product, but it is not the same as a R205 monthly fibre line, and the deals table above shows the pass length alongside each price for exactly that reason.

The other thing worth knowing up front is the hardware. Openserve's prepaid product puts Wi-Fi inside the ONT itself, so no separate router is needed - but that built-in Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz only and the unit has no Ethernet port. If you need to plug in a games console, a desktop PC or a NAS, or you want 5GHz Wi-Fi for higher speeds at short range, this is the wrong product and a standard monthly line is the better fit.

Prepaid is about flexibility rather than headline price. Once you convert the 14-day pass to a monthly equivalent it sits close to standard entry-level monthly fibre - what you are buying is the ability to stop paying in any month you are not using the line, with no cancellation process.

    Frequently asked questions

You buy a pass up front from the RSAweb shop. Once the line is installed and RICA'd, the pass activates and runs for its validity period - 14 days on the R205 20/10 Mbps entry pass. Top up through the Openserve app to keep going, or simply stop and pay nothing until you buy another pass.

No. The R205 pass covers 20/10 Mbps for 14 days, so a full month costs roughly double that. It is important to convert to a monthly equivalent before comparing prepaid against standard month-to-month fibre packages.

No. There is no contract, no debit order and no termination fee. You are never billed unless you actively buy a pass.

No. Openserve's prepaid product uses a Wi-Fi-enabled ONT with no Ethernet port, and its Wi-Fi is 2.4GHz only. If you need wired connections or 5GHz Wi-Fi, a standard monthly fibre line is the better choice.

RSAweb lists a 20/10 Mbps prepaid pass at R205 and a 50/25 Mbps prepaid option at R445. The underlying line is Openserve Web Connect, the same physical fibre used for the entry-level monthly product.

Not meaningfully, once you adjust for pass length. The value of prepaid is flexibility - you pay only in the periods you actually use, with no cancellation paperwork - rather than a lower effective monthly rate.
