"Gigabit fibre" isn't one product - it's four different products wearing the same label
Every major fibre network operator (FNO) in South Africa - Openserve, Vumatel, Frogfoot and Octotel - now sells a tier marketed around the 1,000 Mbps mark. On paper that looks like a straightforward, commoditised product: pick the cheapest gigabit line and move on. In practice, the four networks are selling meaningfully different things under the same "1Gbps" or "gigabit" banner, and the differences matter more than the marketing suggests.
Two of the four - Openserve and Vumatel's entry gigabit tier - are asymmetrical: you get 1,000 Mbps down but a fraction of that up. Frogfoot's is genuinely symmetrical, 1,000 Mbps in both directions. And Octotel doesn't really have a 1,000/1,000 product at all - its fastest fully symmetrical tier runs at 2,500 Mbps each way, for not much more than what the other three charge for half that speed on the upload side.
We spent today checking live retail pricing across multiple resellers on every network to build an accurate, current picture of what a gigabit-class fibre line actually costs in South Africa right now - and, more usefully, what it actually gets you.
A note on where these prices come from
None of the four network operators' own websites returned usable live pricing when we checked them today. Openserve's site is a JavaScript-driven storefront that doesn't expose product prices without an address lookup; Vumatel's and Frogfoot's public sites both errored out entirely on repeated attempts; Octotel sells wholesale-only and its site is a marketing shell aimed at ISPs, not consumers. That's not unusual - Webafrica's own site does the same thing to automated checks, which is why our Webafrica pricing throughout this site is sourced the same way we've sourced it here.
Every price below was checked live today directly on two independent ISP reseller storefronts - Atomic Access and RSAweb - both of which publish itemised, per-package retail pricing without requiring login. Where the two resellers agreed on the underlying speed specification for a network's tier, we treat that spec as confirmed. Where they disagreed on price (which happens - resellers set their own margins on top of the same wholesale line), we report the full range rather than picking one number. We could not get a second source to independently confirm Octotel's headline price, so treat that single figure as reseller-sourced rather than cross-verified, and always re-check the live price for your own address before signing up - none of this is a substitute for confirming the deal on the ISP's own order page.
The gigabit-tier lineup, network by network

A few things jump out immediately. Frogfoot is the only network selling a true 1000/1000 Mbps line at the gigabit price point - if symmetrical speed specifically is what you're after and you want to stay near the R1,000-a-month range, it's the only option on this list that actually delivers it. Vumatel's cheapest gigabit-branded tier is also its most asymmetrical: 1,000 Mbps down but only 250 Mbps up, a quarter of the download speed. Openserve sits in between at 1000/500. And Octotel's actual gigabit-class product isn't a 1,000 Mbps line at all - its cheapest fully symmetrical fibre tier is 2,500 Mbps, priced only around R550-R900/month above the other networks' much slower 1Gbps-branded tiers.
Why the upload number matters more than the marketing suggests
Download speed is what gets advertised because it's the number that maps to "how fast does Netflix load," and for most browsing, streaming and gaming, download is genuinely what matters. Upload speed is the number that decides whether a line can actually handle the things a modern household increasingly does: video calls, cloud backup, uploading photos and video, live streaming, or running anything that sends data out rather than just pulling it in.
A 1000/250 Mbps line and a 1000/1000 Mbps line will feel identical for a 4K Netflix stream. They will feel completely different the moment you're on a video call while a phone backs up 40GB of photos to the cloud in the background, or you're uploading raw video footage for editing, or running a home server that other people connect to. On a 250 Mbps upload line, those tasks compete for a quarter of the bandwidth a 1000 Mbps download gets; on a 1000/1000 line, they don't compete at all.
This is the practical reason the "1Gbps" label is misleading as a shorthand for "the best line available." The right question isn't "which network has the biggest number" - it's "does my household actually push data upward enough for the upload figure to matter," and if so, "which of these four products actually gives me a real upload number rather than a headline download number."
The value comparison nobody puts on a pricing page: rand per combined Mbps
Comparing four products with four different upload speeds on price alone is misleading - a cheaper line with a quarter of the upload speed isn't necessarily better value, it's a different product. The fairer comparison is price per combined Mbps (download plus upload added together), which accounts for how much total capacity you're actually renting per rand.

Two things stand out once you run the numbers this way. First, Frogfoot's symmetrical 1000/1000 line is the best value among the "true" 1Gbps-branded products - roughly 30% cheaper per combined Mbps than Openserve's asymmetrical equivalent, because you're getting twice the upload capacity for a lower base price. Second, Octotel's 2500/2500 tier is the clear outlier - at roughly R0.47 per combined Mbps, it's less than half the cost-per-Mbps of every other product on this list, because you're paying only around 30-40% more in rand terms for more than triple the combined capacity of the other networks' cheapest gigabit tiers. If your address has Octotel coverage and you genuinely need serious upload capacity - a home studio, heavy cloud workflows, hosting - it's worth checking Octotel availability before assuming the "1Gbps" tier on whatever network happens to be at your address is the ceiling.
The caveat: value-per-Mbps only matters if you can use the Mbps. A 2,500 Mbps line is wasted on a household that peaks at 150 Mbps of simultaneous real usage - see the next section before deciding any of this is worth paying for at all.
Who actually needs a gigabit-class line
Before upgrading, it's worth being honest about whether your household can use the extra capacity at all. Netflix in 4K streams at around 25 Mbps. A 4K YouTube video sits around 20 Mbps. A Microsoft Teams or Zoom HD call uses 2-4 Mbps in each direction. Even a household running three simultaneous 4K streams plus a couple of video calls plus general browsing struggles to sustain much past 150-250 Mbps of real concurrent usage - well inside what a mid-tier fibre line already delivers, let alone a gigabit one.
Where the extra speed and, specifically, the extra upload capacity genuinely gets used: large file transfers and cloud backups (photographers, videographers, anyone syncing large working folders to the cloud), running a home server or NAS that other people connect to remotely, live streaming at high bitrate, multiple people in the same house doing all of the above simultaneously, or simply future-proofing a household that's growing into more connected devices and heavier workflows. If none of that describes your household, the honest advice is the same one we've given before: a 200 Mbps line will not be your bottleneck for anything a typical family actually does, and the R400-R900/month difference between a 200 Mbps line and a gigabit-class one buys a lot of everything else. There's also a hardware side to this that catches people out. A gigabit or 2.5-gigabit fibre line is only as fast as the weakest link between the ONT (the box on your wall) and the device you're testing on. Older routers, especially anything pre-Wi-Fi 6, will hard-cap well below the line speed over Wi-Fi regardless of what you're paying for - budget for a capable router as part of the real cost of any upgrade above 500 Mbps, not just the monthly line fee.
Network-by-network: what to actually do with this
On Openserve - the country's largest wholesale footprint, so most likely to be live at your address - the 1000/500 tier is a reasonable middle-ground gigabit option if you don't need full upload symmetry. Compare live pricing across Openserve's many resellers before committing; the R200+ spread we found between just two resellers today suggests real savings are available by shopping around rather than taking the first quote.
On Frogfoot - if it's available at your address and you want genuine symmetrical gigabit without paying Octotel's higher absolute price, this is the pick. It's the cheapest true 1000/1000 product we found, and the value-per-Mbps math above backs that up.
On Vumatel - the cheapest way onto a "1Gbps" line is the 1000/250 tier, but go in understanding you're buying a heavily download-weighted product; if upload matters to you, the 1000/500 step-up costs meaningfully more (roughly R700-R800/month more) for the extra 250 Mbps of upload. Worth comparing against Frogfoot or Octotel coverage at the same address before paying that premium on Vumatel specifically.
On Octotel - mostly a Cape Town network - don't default to assuming its "1Gbps" equivalent is the 1000/200 tier just because that's the number closest to what the other three networks advertise. If genuine upload speed and best value-per-Mbps are the priority, the 2500/2500 tier is worth pricing out even though it looks like "more than you need" on the coverage checker - on the numbers here, it's the better buy for anyone who actually uses the upload side.
