Why a fibre ISP competes on engineering, not price
Almost every South African fibre ISP competes on the same two things: the monthly rate, and how much free hardware comes with signup. Cybersmart built its reputation somewhere else, on protocol support and account features most residential ISPs treat as an afterthought or a paid business add-on.
That's possible because of a fact worth stating plainly: every ISP reselling the same fibre network is selling the identical physical line. A 100/100 Mbps Vumatel connection is the same strand of glass whether Cybersmart, Webafrica or RSAweb bills you for it. What differs is everything that happens at the ISP's own edge, IPv6 support, whether you get a routable static address, and whether upload speed is treated as a core product or an expensive upsell.
Why IPv6 is more than a checkbox
South Africa's IPv4 address space ran out years ago, which is why most residential ISPs put customers behind carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT): many households share one public IPv4 address, and the ISP silently maps traffic in and out. For streaming and browsing this is invisible. For anyone trying to run a game server, receive an inbound VPN connection, or self-host a service at home, CGNAT is the actual reason "port forwarding doesn't work" even though the router settings are correct, there's no public address left to forward to. Cybersmart doesn't have one here: cybersmart.co.za renders its fibre pricing client-side, so an automated check of its fibre pages returns the page shell with no package data attached, the same failure mode this site has already documented for a couple of other boutique ISP sites. Rather than carry over a stale or approximate figure and label it current, this page states the gap plainly and uses the market data below as the honest substitute.
Two independent, defensible sources exist for what follows instead: Cybersmart's own resold-network footprint (published FNO figures, not Cybersmart's), and the live prices FastestFibre already verifies for every other major ISP reselling the same networks. Neither requires guessing at a Cybersmart-specific number.
The networks Cybersmart actually resells on
Cybersmart doesn't build its own national network, it resells wholesale capacity on five open-access FNOs plus a small owned metro footprint in parts of Cape Town. Read this as a coverage ceiling, not a Cybersmart-specific number: being lit on Openserve or Vumatel means a home can order Cybersmart, not that Cybersmart is the ISP most of those connected homes actually picked. - Point self-hosted services at the static address, not a dynamic-DNS hostname. Dynamic DNS exists to work around a changing IP, once the IP no longer changes, the extra hop and occasional propagation delay are pure downside.
- Open only the ports you actually need. A static, routable address makes a self-hosted service reachable from anywhere, including by anyone scanning for it. Firewall rules matter more here than on a CGNAT line, where the ISP's NAT was doing some of that filtering for you by accident.
- Use IPv6 for the traffic that benefits most. Video calls, VPN tunnels and peer-to-peer connections (gaming, some backup software) route more directly over IPv6 when both ends support it, avoiding a NAT traversal step entirely.
